Fasting on Friday and Saturday: What If Ashura Falls on Them?

Islamic Reminder by Breezent

There’s often confusion about fasting on specific days like Friday and Saturday, especially when important Islamic events like Ashura fall on them. Let’s clarify based on authentic Hadith and scholarly opinion.

📜 The Hadith About Not Fasting Friday Alone

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Do not fast on Friday unless you fast a day before or after it.”
[Sahih al-Bukhari 1985, Sahih Muslim 1144]

This teaches that fasting Friday alone without Thursday or Saturday is discouraged—not forbidden.

⚠️ The Hadith About Saturday Fasting

Another hadith says: “Do not fast on Saturday unless it is an obligatory fast.”
[Sunan Abu Dawood 2421]

Scholars argue this applies only when *singling out* Saturday without reason. It doesn't apply when Saturday is part of a Sunnah fast like Ashura.

✅ Ashura on Friday and Saturday

If Ashura (10th Muharram) falls on Saturday, and the 9th on Friday, then fasting both is encouraged.

“This is the day of Ashura. I hope that Allah will accept it as expiation for the year that went before it.”
[Sahih Muslim 1162]

Since you’re not fasting these days without purpose—but rather to observe the Sunnah—this is allowed and rewarded, in shaa Allah.

🔑 Conclusion

Fasting 9th and 10th Muharram, even on Friday and Saturday, is valid. You’re reviving a Sunnah with intention and knowledge.

May Allah accept our deeds and guide us to what pleases Him most.
